This is Barley

Barley is a healthy fun-loving little Patterdale, in NJ, and he is going to make a fantastic companion. His current foster mother has hired a very experienced dog trainer to make him even more ready for adoption.

The trainer thinks that Barley may be a little head shy, and perhaps was smacked by a former owner. This means that when being petted he should not be confronted head on for now.

He takes a little time to get used to new people, and it is suspected that he was left alone far to much in the past.

In his foster home he is making great progress, and every day becomes happier.  He would be ideal as a single pet, having a family that is home a lot. Given that extra TLC we all deserve, Barley will be an outstanding addition to his new family.

(from Pat, Barley's trainer)
I have been working with Barley a few weeks now.  I walk and run with him at least 5 times a week.  He lives in a cat rescue so he is surrounded by cats - he will pull in the beginning to go toward the cats - he does listen when I say no.  After walking and running with him he settles right down.

He was definitely over weight .  He is not a chewer or a problem barker.  Loves peanut butter, so I will put a little on a bully stick so he has something to do.

He will need a home where someone takes control and definitely exercises him.  The more the better.
He is very affectionate - loves to be rubbed also loves water.  I have not had any problems with him - he does listen - but again I have a strong personality and I am the pack leader.  He really responds well.  He loves to stand on his hind legs - puts his two front paws together and waves them when he sees my car pull into the property

I understand he bit a mail carrier - owner was coming out the of the house with the dog to put him in a outside pen - carrier was walking onto the property - again I don't think the dog was ever walked. There was never a problem before and he was raised with children.

My understanding is the dog has lived in a garage with two other dogs - also lived in a hallway in the house - this means he was very bored and he is very intelligent so that was not a good senario.

I personally feel he deserves a second chance - I have worked with many shelter dogs and he does not fit the aggressive category.

He is up to date on all vaccinations, he is neutered, has had his stool tested and it is negative of all parasites. He did very well at the vets office and they liked him alot.

If you can help Barley in anyway we would really appreciate it - I honestly feel he deserves a second chance.

If you are interested in becoming Barley's new family, you must be within driving distance.  Barley needs to get to know you, and along with his trainer, to show you what a great dog he has become.

We will not ship Barley.

As always, because Barley is a working breed, he must have a secure fenced yard to keep him safe.

If you can give his handsome little guy an active, forever home please contact:
